Livable Communities Landscape Projects
The Livable Communities Initiative sponsored by the County Executive’s
Office was launched on April 22, 2003, at the Drew Freeman Middle
School in Suitland, Maryland. This Initiative will create communities
that promote and support sound principles for economic development,
environmental improvement, educational growth, and safe clean streets
so that residents have an attractive place to live, work, plan
and in which they have a sense of pride. To date, seventy-eight
(78) projects have been aesthetic improvements to gateways into
our County, medians, intersections and streetscapes. These projects
have already received positive response from citizens and communities.
In fact, last year (2003) the County received eleven (11) awards
for beautification. Another sixteen (16) projects are scheduled
for completion during this fiscal year. These projects are:
- Gateway Monument: MD 1A at Eastern Avenue
- Gateway Monument: MD 211 at Eastern Avenue
- Gateway Monument: MD 4 at Southern Avenue
- Gateway Monument: MD 210 at Southern Avenue
- Gateway Monument: MD 212 at Eastern Avenue

As an integral component of the Livable Communities Initiative,
County Executive Jack B. Johnson proclaims the third Saturday of
October as Gorgeous Prince George’s Day. This special event
promotes the planting of trees, shrubs, and flowers by volunteers
or organizations, businesses, schools, municipalities and citizen
groups in order to beautify their communities in public areas.
“The benefit of trees to our environment is immeasurable,” said
County Executive Johnson. Trees improve the air we breathe as well
as attract birds and other wildlife to the area. By planting trees
and shrubs, we create a clean, healthy environment for our citizens
and residents to live, work and play.
Last year’s Gorgeous Prince George’s Day accomplishments
include landscape upgrades for fifty-eight (58) sites.
Past and future projects demonstrate our strong commitment to
the Livable Communities Initiative. The Initiative will create
communities that promote and support sound principles for economic
development, environmental improvement, educational growth and
safe clean streets to that residents have an attractive place to
live, work, plan and have a sense of pride. Our Department strives
to make our roads safe and to provide an aesthetically pleasing
experience for its users.
